ABOUT ME

"When you get, give. When you learn, teach" Dr. M. Angelou

I am very passionate about teaching in general and about urban education in particular.  Racial, ethnic and academic diversity of the urban setting creates a challenging environment in which only a highly qualified staff can serve and implement a rigorous curriculum. As an immigrant I identify with many of CPS' students and the challenges that they face. In addition, I bring and communicate a multicultural world view to my students.

General Information & Education

I was born and raised in Poland. Both of my parents and other members of an extended family were educators in various subject matters and on various levels. I was growing up during the communist time and during anti-communist Solidarity movement struggles. These experiences built my awareness and sensitivity towards social and economic justice. While in Poland I graduated with a Law degree from Maria Curie- Sklodowski in Lublin. I came to United States in 1991 and several months later enrolled in an ESL Program in National- Louis University.

District & Programs

Since I believe in life-long learning, I have challenged myself by participating and completing Polk Brothers Program at University of Chicago, CTTI Program on University of Illinois at Chicago and extended IB workshops. Lately, I am a proud member of MSU-Wipro Stem and Leadership Fellowship. Throughout my professional career I have been teaching in Chicago Public Schools. For the past 6 years, I have been teaching mathematics at Bogan Computer Technical High School. My most current teaching assignment includes Probability and Statistics, Mathematical Ideas (Dual Credit), IB Mathematical Studies and Advanced Algebra.

After I had completed the language pre-requisites and competency exam, I started taking regular classes majoring in Mathematics and Science. I completed undergraduate study in 1997. Three years later, I joined Teachers for Chicago Program which I completed in 2002 receiving a Master’s Degree in Teaching from Chicago State University. I continued studying mathematics at DePaul University and I was awarded a Master of Arts Degree in Mathematical Education in 2006.

Family & Hobby

Outside of my professional life, I like to spend time with my family and friends. My son, Przemyslaw Kania, is a Spanish teacher and basketball coach at two Chicago Public High Schools. I love traveling, meeting new people and learning their history as well as culture. I enjoy reading, gardening and spending time outdoors.
